One of the most important aspects of martial art training is hyungs (patterns). Hyungs, called kata or poom-se, are a series of defending and attacking movements performed against imaginary opponents in a set pattern. Through the practice of forms, students learn the application of various techniques and classical combinations. Forms serve a multi-dimensional purpose, aiding in the development of coordination, balance, timing, breath control and rhythm. Rock Solid teaches Tang Soo Do and Taekwondo forms.
Basic patterns consist of a few blocks and strikes combined with little in the way of footwork. This early integration of basic techniques helps the student develop rhythm, power, and control. As the student progresses through the ranks, the hyungs become increasingly complex. Footwork and body movement intensify until movement becomes more natural and the student's techniques become fluid.
The Korean words Pyung Ahn, translated mean:
Pyung = Well Balanced, Calm, Peaceful Ahn = Safe Comfortable, Secure
